THE SIGNIFICANCE OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

The eight day of March is celebrated globally each year as the International Women’s Day: under various themes. This annual event recognizes women’s contributions across various fields, raises awareness about gender equality, and promotes empowerment. It serves as a platform to highlight social, economic, cultural, and political achievements while advocating for women’s rights worldwide. This year 2025 is not different. The theme chosen for this year’s celebration is ‘Accelerate Action’.

This annual commemoration event has its roots in the early 20th century, when labour movements protested poor working conditions during the rapid industrialisation in Europe. The key milestones of this women’s movement include the 1908 march of 15,000 women in New York City demanding better rights and the establishment of National Woman’s Day in the United States in 1909. In 1910, Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of International Women’s Day, leading to its first celebration in multiple countries in 1911. The defining moment however occurred in 1917 when Russian women went on strike to solidify March 8 as the date for appreciate womanhood and women’s right. The day also became a platform for anti-war demonstrations during World War I. The United Nations formally recognized International Women’s Day in 1975, further cementing its global significance.

Beyond the funfair and celebrations, the day also provides a forum to highlight gender disparities and the advocacy for change to address existent challenges confronting womanhood such as economic inequality, political underrepresentation, and gender-based violence. The day serves as a reminder of the progress made and the steps needed to achieve gender equality. The occasion also fosters global solidarity among women from diverse backgrounds, encouraging discussions on policies and social norms that impact their lives. Despite progress made over the years, significant barriers however remain. The International Women’s Day 2025 with the theme ‘Accelerate Action’ therefore provides a crucial opportunity to assess achievements, recognize challenges, and renew commitments toward a more inclusive future on one hand while seeking avenues and opportunities to accelerating action on improving women’s rights of access to equitable health and employment opportunities.

Medela felicitates with Women in Nigeria and the World at large. We wish all women a happy celebration and the acceleration of action to especially promote the health and well-being of women in Nigeria ad the World at large.
